Everybody in India would have definitely heard of Dengue, as it is extremely prevalent in most of the Asian countries, including India. Dengue fever is a painful and debilitating mosquito-borne disease caused by the dengue virus.
But, do you know that an estimated 390 million dengue infections occur worldwide each year? Most cases of dengue fever occur in the tropical areas of the world. Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus. The mosquito becomes infected when it bites a person with dengue virus in their blood. But, it cannot be spread directly from one person to another person. The World Health Organization estimates there may be 50–100 million dengue infections worldwide every year.
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is systemic disease caused by one of four sero-types of virus from the genus Flavivirus, which also includes the pathogens responsible for yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis.
Sometimes, the symptoms are mild and can be mistaken for those of the flu or other viral infections. Young children and people who have never had the infection may tend to have milder cases than older children and adults. But, you should remember that these can develop into serious problems later. These symptoms could also lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever, a rare complication characterized by high fever, damage to the lymph and blood vessels, bleeding from the nose and gums, enlargement of the liver, and failure of the circulatory system. The symptoms may lead to massive bleeding, shock, and ultimately death. This is called Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). People with weakened immune systems, as well as those with a second or subsequent dengue infection, could be at a greater risk for developing dengue hemorrhagic fever.

- Skin rash, which appears two to five days after the onset of fever
- Mild bleeding, from the nose or gums, or easy bruising
How is Dengue Fever Diagnosed?
Doctors can easily be diagnosed through a blood test to check for the virus or antibodies of dengue. If you become sick after traveling to an area prone to dengue fever, let your doctor know. This will allow your doctor to evaluate the possibility of your getting a dengue infection.
